Al Besheriya Island is a small and uninhabited Island, located 240; 58m; 1”- North and 510; 37m; 2” - East.

The island is about 660m x100m,area.

QAFCO has shown its environmental interest in the Island as early as 1999. In that year, QAFCO (in co-operation with the Supreme Council for the Environmental and Natural Reserves{SCENR{, now known as Ministry of Environment) organized a “Clean Up Campaign” for the Island. The campaign was carried out on 25.02.1999. Around 200 of QAFCO Employees and their families, and 30 from the SCENR participated in the campaign. During that campaign:

· The Island was cleaned and rubbish collected and sent to Mesaieed disposal sites.

· 200 mangrove trees (brought by the SCENR) were planted.

· Huge signs having environmental messages were fixed.

· Rubbish drums were placed on the Island.

In April 2006 QAFCO carried out some civil work on the sheds in the island :

· The broken and damaged materials were removed from the roof, side walls, floor of the wooden shed and the stone shed.

· The wooden shed was provided with additional strengthening using timber pieces.

· A new roof made up of palm leaves was provided for the wooden shed.

· The floor was covered up with new tarpaulin sheets.

· The roof of the stone shed was rebuilt using plywood and timber pieces.

· The side walls were patched up with cement plaster in areas with severe damage. Rest of the walls were left untouched.

· General cleaning was carried out for both the sheds. In 25.11.2006 QAFCO, again in partnership with the SCENR (Marine Environmental Surveillance Department), organized another clean-up campaign where around 150 of QAFCO employees and their families and 25 of the SCENR staff participated).

On 3rd November 2006, the SCENR (now known as the Ministry of Environment) affirmed their trust in QAFCO’s environmentally responsible practices and care, and granted QAFCO the “Environmental Custody” of the Besheriya Island. QAFCO has since been monitoring the environmental status of the island and carried out the Baseline Ecological Survey of the Island

Based on the study conducted for the island (by Environment Studies centre of Qatar University), it has been observed that the island is majorly favored by nesting and migrating birds.

QAFCO is taking care to ensure that the nesting season for the birds is undisturbed, and at the same time will carefully monitor the movement of these birds.

A book describing the findings of the Baseline Ecological Survey conducted for the Al-Besheriya Island was launched on 24 April 2010, during the QP Environment Fair.
